5 Pocket Combo Ruck Mod Review: Maximize Your Rucksack Storage

If you're looking to add more storage and organization to your tactical rucksack, the 5 Pocket Combo Ruck Mod from Tactical Tailor is a game-changer. This modular accessory attaches to your ruck's PALS webbing and provides five versatile pockets for everything from small gear to bulky items. In this review, we'll break down its design, installation, real-world performance, and how it stacks up against other ruck modifications.

Whether you're a military professional, an outdoor enthusiast, or a prepper, having quick access to your essentials can make all the difference. The 5 Pocket Combo Ruck Mod is designed to increase your ruck's capacity without compromising comfort or balance. Let's dive into the details and see if this mod lives up to the hype.

Design and Construction

The 5 Pocket Combo Ruck Mod is crafted from durable 1000D Cordura nylon, the same material used in many tactical gear items. This ensures it can withstand rough handling, abrasion, and harsh weather conditions. The stitching is reinforced at stress points, and the entire unit is built to last, even with heavy use.

The mod features a combination of pocket sizes: two large pockets, two medium-sized pockets, and one slim zippered pocket. This variety allows you to organize gear by size and importance. The large pockets are perfect for items like a first aid kit, a rain jacket, or a hydration bladder. The medium pockets work well for tools, maps, or snacks, while the slim pocket is ideal for documents or a smartphone.

All pockets have YKK zippers with paracord pulls, making them easy to open even with gloves. The back of the mod is covered with PALS webbing, which allows it to be attached to any rucksack with MOLLE/PALS compatibility. The webbing is tightly woven, ensuring a secure fit that won't sag or shift during movement.

• Constructed from 1000D Cordura nylon for durability
• Five pockets of varying sizes for versatile storage
• YKK zippers with paracord pulls for easy access
• PALS webbing on back for secure attachment

Installation and Compatibility

Installing the 5 Pocket Combo Ruck Mod is straightforward. Simply align the PALS webbing on the back of the mod with the webbing on your rucksack, then weave the included MALICE clips through both sets of webbing. The clips are sturdy and hold the mod firmly in place, preventing any unwanted movement.

This mod is compatible with a wide range of rucksacks, including those from Tactical Tailor, such as the MALICE packs. It can be attached to the front, sides, or even the bottom of your ruck, depending on your needs. However, it's important to consider weight distribution – placing heavy items in the mod can affect your center of gravity, so plan your load accordingly.

For those who want to expand their ruck's storage further, Tactical Tailor offers other ruck mods like the Hydration Pocket Ruck Mod and the RTO Zipper Ruck Mod. These can be used in conjunction with the 5 Pocket Combo to create a highly customized load-bearing setup.

• Includes MALICE clips for easy attachment
• Compatible with most MOLLE/PALS rucksacks
• Can be mounted on front, sides, or bottom
• Pairs well with other ruck mods for expanded storage

Real-World Performance

To test the 5 Pocket Combo Ruck Mod, I attached it to my Tactical Tailor MALICE pack and used it during a weekend hiking trip. I loaded the large pockets with a compact stove and a lightweight sleeping bag, the medium pockets with a map and a multitool, and the slim pocket with a notepad and pen. The mod held everything securely, and the zippers never snagged or opened accidentally.

During a 10-mile hike, the mod remained stable, with no noticeable sway or bounce. The weight was distributed well, and the mod did not interfere with the pack's shoulder straps or hip belt. Accessing gear was quick and easy, even while on the move – a huge advantage over digging through the main compartment.

One minor issue I noticed was that the slim pocket is not padded, so delicate items like a smartphone could be at risk if the pack is dropped. However, this is a minor concern for most users who will use the mod for rugged gear. Overall, the 5 Pocket Combo Ruck Mod performed admirably in real-world conditions.

• Stable and secure during high-intensity activities
• Quick access to gear without removing the pack
• Durable zippers and hardware
• Minor: slim pocket lacks padding

Comparison with Other Ruck Mods

Tactical Tailor offers a variety of ruck mods, each designed for specific needs. The 5 Pocket Combo Ruck Mod is a versatile all-rounder, but it's not the only option. For example, the Storm Flap Ruck Mod provides a large, weather-resistant cover that can protect your gear from rain and snow, while the Enlarged Radio Pocket Ruck Mod is designed specifically for carrying a radio or other bulky electronics.

If you need a simple hydration solution, the Hydration Pocket Ruck Mod is a lightweight option that holds a hydration bladder and has a tube port. The Grommet Replacement Ruck Mod is more of a repair part than an accessory, but it's useful for fixing damaged grommets on your ruck.

The 5 Pocket Combo stands out because it offers multiple pockets in one unit, making it a cost-effective and space-saving solution. Instead of attaching several individual pouches, you get five pockets in a single, streamlined package. This reduces bulk and keeps your gear organized.

• Versatile all-in-one solution vs. specialized mods
• Saves space compared to multiple separate pouches
• Ideal for users who need varied storage without bulk

The 5 Pocket Combo Ruck Mod is a well-built, practical accessory that significantly enhances your rucksack's storage capabilities. Its durable construction, easy installation, and versatile pocket configuration make it a worthwhile investment for anyone who wants to stay organized in the field. If you're in the market for a reliable ruck mod, this one should be at the top of your list.
